Breitling Superocean brings a summer feeling

27.6.2023

Diver’s watches became popular in the 60s, when scuba diving as a hobby began to spread rapidly. Jacques Cousteau, a marine explorer known for his red beanie and pioneer of scuba diving, acted as an inspiration for his part. So it’s no wonder that watch manufacturers answered the call with their own diver’s watches, as well as the Swiss Breitling, which renewed its popular Superocean watch collection last year.

The Superocean watch collection follows the formula of the original model by focusing on the clarity of time display. The large index marks and numbers make the watch readable, which is one of the most important features of a diver’s watch in addition to reliability. The use of lume has not been spared, so that the indexes and hands stand out perfectly even in the dark.

The most recognizable detail of the Superocean is the large minute ring inside the diving ring, which is rotated by a square minute hand. The original 60s watch didn’t have a seconds hand at all, because why would divers need one? The watch was called by the additional name Slow Motion, i.e. “slowed down”, which was due to the minute-based chronograph function, where it took an hour for the minute hand to go around the entire dial. However, current Superocean watches have a seconds hand, which is a “must have” feature these days.

Suitable for everyone

The Superocean collection covers wrists of all sizes, as it is offered in sizes of 46, 44, 42 and 36 millimeters. You can choose steel, steel-gold, or bronze (in the 42- and 44-millimeter versions) as the material for the watch case. The strap options are rubber and steel, and both have an adjustable folding clasp, which allows the watch to be worn even over a diving suit. The watch’s diving ring rotates in one direction, and the crown is screw-lockable, so it meets the basic requirements for a diver’s watch.

The movement in the Superocean watches is the Breitling Caliber 17, which offers a power reserve of 38 hours when self-winding. Water resistance is guaranteed up to 300 meters, and the watch can withstand shocks, sand, and sea water. The prices of the Superocean collection start at 4,850 euros, which gives you a 36mm version with a cheerful color and a rubber strap. The price range as a whole remains attractively in the price range of less than 6,000 euros.

According to Breitling, the Superocean collection is no longer just a diver’s watch, but it fits the wrist, whether the sport is diving, surfing, swimming, or even sitting at a beach bar. It’s a relaxed watch model in every way, which is perfectly suited as a summer watch.
