Grand Seiko Tentagraph – dynamic and harmonious timekeeping

25.8.2023

When Grand Seiko Evolution 9 Tentagraph SLGC001 was published in Watches & Wonders Geneve it created waves of excitement internationally. A high-beat automatic chronograph with three days power reserve is a rarity by itself, but when crafted according to the quality standards of Grand Seiko, it’s an even greater momentous occasion.

The name Tentagraph comes from the words Ten after the 1/10 second precision, three after the three day power reserve and automatic chronograph, self explanatorily because it’s an automatic chronograph.
The name reveals the function but hides the heart of the watch. It is designed according to the Evolution 9 design philosophy which emphasizes readability. For a chronograph the dial is exceptionally readable and harmonious. The time and effort spent in the design is clearly visible in the subtle charm of the watch.

The color and the texture of the dial are inspired by Mount Iwate, as watches made in the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi often are. The studio lies nearly on the slopes of Mount Iwate so the inspiration is always present. Visually the dial represents the nocturnal vista of the valleys on a moonlit night. The Grand Seiko way of connecting the visuals to the nature of Japan pays off again.

The watch itself is a milestone for Grand Seiko. SLGC001 Tentagraph is the company’s first mechanical chronograph. The movement represents the peak performance from Grand Seiko. The watch houses the new Caliber 9SC5 movement with the revolutionary dual impulse escapement Grand Seiko released last year. The 72 hour power reserve of the Tentagraph is unmatched in 1/10 precision chronographs. The chronograph function is implemented with the more demanding but elegant column wheel technology. Quality surpasses the challenge for Grand Seiko.

One of the keystones of Evolution 9 design philosophy is durability. The watch case is constructed of ‘High-intensity’ titanium alloy developed by Grand Seiko. It is 30 percent more scratch resistant and lighter than stainless steel. Also the ceramic bezel and the box shaped sapphire crystal improve the durability to meet Grand Seiko standards.

The Grand Seiko Tentagraph expands the sporty and dynamic Evolution 9 series towards a more refined direction. Despite the sporty origins and functions the Tentagraph is a harmonious watch with an almost dress watch outlook that makes it suitable for every occasion.
